Summer Talk – Rediscovering High Angle Battery

Saturday, June 24, 2023
High Angle Battery

In the second of our two summer Saturday afternoon talks Steve Wallis, Senior Archaeologist for Dorset Council, will be talking about the history of Portland’s High Angle Battery and some exciting new developments for the site.

High Angle Battery is one of Portland’s hidden gems. It is part of the story of Portland’s military past and a significant element in an ‘arms race’ in the later 19th century. However, it is not well-known and it is not clear to visitors what it was used for. Dorset Council and other organisations are working on a bid to the National Lottery’s Heritage Fund to improve the site’s interpretation and management, giving the Battery the recognition it deserves.

The talk will be held in Hope United Reformed Church at 8 Trinity Street.  Doors will open at 2.00pm and the talk will begin at 2.30pm.

Tickets will be available on the door and are £2.00 for members of the Friends and £3.00 for visitors. (Exact change would be appreciated, if possible).
